Direct Appeals & Sentence Modification
Direct Appeals
In Indiana, a person convicted of a crime has a constitutional right to appeal the conviction.  In some circumstances, a person can appeal a sentence as well, even if it was the result of a guilty plea.  This process, however, must be initiated within thirty (30) days from the conviction and/or sentence date.  Ms. Liell has appeared as counsel of record in almost 200 appeals to the Indiana Court of Appeals and Indiana Supreme Court.    Ms. Liell’s years of experience has brought relief to numerous litigants throughout the State of Indiana.

Several of Ms. Liell’s more high profile appeals involved the wrongful convictions of Dave Camm.  Camm was falsely accused in 2000 of murdering his wife and two children.  After his conviction in 2002, Ms. Liell successfully appealed Camm’s conviction, and won him a new trial.  In 2006, Camm was again wrongfully convicted, and again Ms. Liell successfully appealed Camm’s convictions.  In 2013, Camm was finally provided a fair trial and was found innocent.  He is a free man today.

Sentence Modifications
In Indiana, a person may seek to have modified the length or terms of a sentence imposed as a result of a criminal conviction.  A new law passed in 2014, and amended in 2015, provides for an increased number of individuals who may be eligible for a sentence modification.  Ms. Liell brings a fresh approach and passionate dedication to her representation in these matters.
Post Conviction Relief
In Indiana, a person who has been unsuccessful on direct appeal may file a Petition for Post Conviction Relief, raising grounds which may provide relief from a conviction and/or a sentence.  Post Conviction proceedings can also be used to challenge a guilty plea.  Ms. Liell has represented hundreds of Petitioners in these proceedings, securing new trials or dismissals for many.
